Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency

April 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Check out the things that you can do with it:
FIRST
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobiles is 112. If you find
yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network and there is
an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network
to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number
112 can b e dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

SECOND
Have you locked your keys in the car?

Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy
someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the
car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell
phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your
car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button,
holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock.
Save someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no
object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach
someone who has the other “remote” for your car, you can unlock the
doors (or the trunk).

Editor’s Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked
our car over a cell phone!”

THIRD
Hidden Battery Power

Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the
keys *3370# your cell will restart with this reserve and the instrument
will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when
you charge your cell next time.

FOURTH
How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?

To check your Mobile phone’s serial number, key in the following
digits on your phone: * # 0 6 #. A 15- digit code will appear on the screen.
This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it
somewhere safe. When your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service
provider and give them this code.

They will then be able to block your handset so even if the
thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You
probably won’t get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever
stole it can’t use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would
be no point in people stealing mobile phones.
And Finally

FIFTH
Free Directory Service for Cells

Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for
411 information calls when they don’t have to. Most of us do not carry a
telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more
of a problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply
dial: (800) FREE 411, or (800)

373-3411 without incurring any charge at all.

Program this into your cell phone now.

This is the kind of information people don’t mind receiving, so pass it on to your family and friends.

With Economy Tied to Wall St., New York Braces for Job Cuts

March 24th, 2008 · No Comments

New York is accustomed to job losses on Wall Street. They come with just about every economic slump, and their impact is felt throughout the city.

But now, as the city braces for a big contraction in the financial sector as a result of the credit crisis and the collapse of Bear Stearns, the fallout could be worse than in the past.

The New York economy is more dependent than ever on high Wall Street incomes, which have jumped by more than half since 2001, to an average of $387,000, according to the city comptroller’s office.

A Lamborghini for your ear

March 24th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Bluetooth headsets are a dime a dozen these days (or at least $4.99), and it’s getting more difficult to separate from the pack all the time. Even the once-vaunted Jawbone, for instance, has resorted to some trash talking.

But here’s one that’s sure to draw some attention, as long as would-be admirers can see the logo: The Lamborghini “Bello.” Bearing the famous bull emblem, the headset was designed by none other than a son of the legendary auto house’s founder, according to PhoneArena. It weighs just 9 grams and claims 6 hours of talk time for around $70–a mere pittance considering the brand name.

Think before you install Windows Updates

March 24th, 2008 · No Comments

Look, people, it’s 2008: You’re responsible for what you install on your PC.

The outrage is spewing forth over Apple’s move to include Safari 3.1 as part of its Software Update program. The new twist is that Windows users who never had installed Safari are now seeing it pop up in Software Update, where they are accustomed to seeing updates for iTunes and Quicktime, and that’s not sitting well with many who inadvertently installed the browser.

If you don’t want to download Safari for Windows, don’t download Safari for Windows.

Network Solutions shutters anti-Islam film site

March 24th, 2008 · No Comments

Network Solutions has suspended a Web site that a Dutch lawmaker was using to promote a yet-to-be-released film critical of Islam.

The Web hosting service said it is investigating whether content on the site–Fitnathemovie.com–is in violation of the hosting service’s acceptable use policy.

The 15-minute movie, called Fitna–an Arabic word that means “test of faith in times of trial”–describes Islam as “the enemy of freedom,” according to comments made by Geert Wilders, a Dutch lawmaker and the film’s maker. Dutch officials fear the movie could spark violence, as happened after Danish newspapers published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. The movie is set for release at month’s end.

Can Microsoft make Silverlight shine?

March 24th, 2008 · No Comments

When Microsoft’s Brian Goldfarb talks about Silverlight, he is usually having one of two types of conversations.

One is centered on market share and the fact that Adobe Systems’ Flash is nearly ubiquitous on Internet-connected PCs, while Microsoft’s rival technology is still on only a minority of devices.

That conversation typically starts out something like this: “You’re not on 98 percent of machines like Adobe, so why should we care?”
